Caricatures

John Mercer by MontyThe earliest caricatures in the Museum collection are prints from Vanity Fair, a weekly magazine that was famed for its humorous illustrations. Captain Tregaskis by Monty

There are also examples of sketches by Andrew Murphy and Rowel Friers, both local artists.

The majority of drawings showcase the work of John ‘Monty’ Montgomery, a Bangorian whose promising career was sadly cut short by early death. His ability to capture the eccentricities of well-known Bangor personalities is extremely appealing and it makes this collection a fascinating insight into the Bangor of a century ago.
